National News – Gospel music icon Tope Alabi has paid tribute to the late Nigerian gospel singer Toun Soetan, describing her as “a true spiritual mother and a matriarch in gospel music.”
Alabi shared her heartfelt message on Facebook on Sunday, mourning the passing of Soetan, who was 73.
She praised Soetan’s life-long dedication to spreading the message of Christ through music, noting that her legacy will continue to inspire gospel ministers and followers across Nigeria.
Toun Soetan, also known as Racheal Olatoun Soetan, passed away after a life devoted to Christian ministry.
Her death was confirmed by gospel comedian Woli Agba via social media on Friday.
Born in Lagos and raised in a Muslim household, she embraced Christianity in 1974 at Oritamefa Baptist Church in Ibadan, an experience that shaped her gospel career.
Before fully dedicating herself to music, Soetan taught for 16 years at Oritamefa Baptist School and later co-managed Pathfinder College with her husband, Titus Soetan.
Over more than four decades, Soetan became a pioneer in Nigeria’s gospel music scene with hits such as Train Up Your Child and Darling Jesus.
Her songs and ministry influenced generations of gospel singers, and her contributions remain a significant part of the Nigerian gospel music legacy.
She is survived by her husband, family members, and a wide circle of gospel colleagues and admirers.
Tope Alabi’s tribute highlighted Soetan’s role as a spiritual guide and mentor, emphasizing that her music and faith-driven life will continue to inspire future generations.
