National News – Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside has urged newly eligible Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to demonstrate his capabilities at the international level.

The 24-year-old Wrexham goalkeeper recently received FIFA approval to switch allegiance from England, where he played at youth level but never made a senior appearance.

Okonkwo now joins a competitive Nigeria goalkeeping roster including Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye, and Francis Uzoho.

Peterside emphasized that club success does not automatically translate to national team performance, highlighting the unique challenges players face in African football.

Peterside noted that many players struggle to replicate European club form in African competitions, pointing to differences in weather, infrastructure, and playing conditions.

“I’ve seen players excel at their clubs but find it difficult with the national team.

It’s a different ball game entirely,” Peterside said. Despite the warning, he acknowledged Nigeria’s goalkeeping depth and competition for starting positions.

“We already have two or three very good goalkeepers. Nwabali has performed well, and Maduka has returned to strengthen the squad,” he added.

Okonkwo, who came through Arsenal’s academy and played for Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, has been Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper, making over 100 appearances and contributing to two promotions.

With Nigeria scheduled to participate in the Unity Cup in May against Zimbabwe and face either India or Jamaica, followed by friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June, these fixtures offer Okonkwo the chance to earn his senior debut.

Peterside’s caution serves as a reminder that international football demands more than club-level performance, requiring adaptability, mental strength, and resilience.
