National News – Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has revealed that the Rivers Rainbow Coalition donated ₦500 million to the family of late Senator Barinada Mpigi.

The announcement was made on Thursday in Port Harcourt during a Night of Tribute held in honour of the former lawmaker, who died on February 19 after a brief illness.

Wike explained that the financial support will be used to establish a foundation for Mpigi’s family, ensuring long-term assistance and preserving his legacy.

According to him, the initiative reflects the coalition’s commitment to standing by the deceased’s loved ones beyond ceremonial tributes.

He stressed that practical support is more meaningful than organising burial committees alone.

The former Rivers governor described Mpigi, popularly known as “Barry,” as a loyal ally and dependable political figure who remained steadfast during challenging times.

He recalled how the late senator consistently showed solidarity during political crises, highlighting his courage and commitment to stability in Rivers State politics.

Leaders across party lines also paid glowing tributes, emphasising Mpigi’s contributions to governance and development.

Magnus Abe noted that the late senator’s impact on Ogoni land and Nigeria would remain indelible, while Tony Okocha described him as a gentle and dedicated political figure.

Others praised his role in advancing projects such as the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni.

Family members, including his younger brother Monday Mpigi, described the deceased as the backbone of the family, a dependable figure who supported many people.

Speakers at the event agreed that his death has created a significant vacuum in Rivers politics, but his legacy of service, loyalty, and generosity will endure.
