National News – Suspected gunmen on Thursday night killed eight residents in Mbwelle village, located in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria.
The deadly attack occurred around 11 p.m., when armed assailants reportedly stormed the community and opened fire indiscriminately on villagers.
Most of the victims were members of the same extended family, raising concerns over targeted violence in the area.
Community sources identified the deceased to include Elder Iliya Mangut Dakus, Luck Titus Dakus, Habila Istifanu Dakus, Hassan Istifanus Dakus, Mrs Hassan Moses Dakus, Biggie Lucky Dakus, Sunday Gideon Dakus, and Innocent Barnabas Makwin.
Three other residents were injured during the attack, while several individuals remain missing as of Friday morning.
According to Kefas Mallai, Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, the attackers operated for hours without any security intervention.
He alleged that despite the proximity of security forces, no response came until the assailants had fled.
Youth leader Christopher Luka also confirmed the incident, describing it as a devastating assault that has left the community in fear and mourning.
Recent reports indicate that violence has escalated across Plateau State, particularly in Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Jos South LGAs.
Earlier this week, separate ambushes along key rural roads led to additional deaths and injuries, with victims including farmers, miners, and commuters.
Local groups have raised alarms over what they describe as a sustained pattern of attacks targeting specific communities.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest killings.
However, residents are calling for increased surveillance, rapid response measures, and stronger protection across vulnerable areas to prevent further bloodshed.
