National News – The Lagos State Government has called on labour unions to upgrade their capabilities in response to changing workplace realities driven by technology and global economic shifts.
The appeal was made during a two-day training programme for union leaders and stakeholders held in Alausa, Lagos.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, emphasised the urgent need for workers and labour representatives to adapt to modern work systems shaped by automation, digital tools and flexible work structures.
He noted that traditional approaches to industrial relations must evolve to remain effective in a rapidly transforming environment.
Ayantayo stressed the importance of cooperation between labour unions, employers and government institutions, adding that a more collaborative approach would enhance productivity and ensure a stable industrial climate.
He encouraged union leaders to embrace continuous learning and skill development as essential tools for navigating emerging challenges.
Also addressing participants, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Olubusola Abidakun, described the initiative as timely and necessary.
She highlighted the growing impact of global interconnectedness and technological advancement on labour markets, urging stakeholders to translate insights from the training into actionable strategies that strengthen workforce stability.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Lagos, Abiodun Aladetan, praised the state government for fostering open dialogue with labour groups.
He noted that sustained engagement and mutual understanding between stakeholders would support long-term progress and development.
The programme reflects ongoing efforts to align labour practices with modern economic realities, positioning Lagos as a forward-looking hub focused on innovation, productivity and industrial harmony.
