National News – Paddington The Musical has dominated the 50th edition of the Olivier Awards in London, winning seven major prizes in a night that celebrated the best of UK theatre.

The awards ceremony, held at the Royal Albert Hall on April 12, honoured outstanding stage productions over the past year.

The family-friendly show, based on the beloved Paddington stories, took home Best New Musical, alongside awards for acting, directing, costume, and set design, marking it as the standout production of the night.

The musical’s success was driven by its creative team, including writer Jessica Swale and composer Tom Fletcher, who focused on themes of kindness and inclusivity.

The production also earned joint Best Actor in a Musical awards for James Hameed and Arti Shah, whose dual portrayal of Paddington impressed judges and audiences alike.

Shah, in her acceptance speech, highlighted the importance of embracing differences, delivering one of the night’s most emotional moments.

Elsewhere, Evita secured two awards, with Rachel Zegler winning Best Actress in a Musical for her modern interpretation of the iconic role.

Her unique balcony performances outside the theatre drew large crowds and widened access to live theatre.

In the drama categories, Rosamund Pike won Best Actress in a Play for Inter Alia, while Jack Holden claimed Best Actor for Kenrex.

Supporting role honours went to Paapa Essiedu for All My Sons and Julie Hesmondhalgh for Punch, a play that also won Best New Play.

Industry voices used the platform to call for continued funding of youth theatre programmes, stressing their importance in nurturing future talent.

The Olivier Awards, established in 1976, remain the UK’s most prestigious theatre honours.

This year’s milestone edition featured performances from top West End productions, reinforcing theatre’s cultural relevance and enduring appeal.
