National News – Pope Leo XIV has reaffirmed that his mission is spiritual rather than political, declaring that he has no fear of the administration of United States President Donald Trump.
The Pontiff made this known while speaking to journalists aboard the papal plane as he began his African tour.
Responding to recent remarks from Trump, who criticised his stance on global security issues, the Pope stressed that he does not see himself as a political actor and has no intention of engaging in political debates.
He maintained that his role is to uphold the message of the Gospel and advocate for peace across nations.
The Catholic leader cautioned against the misuse of religious teachings for political purposes, noting that his message is centred on promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and unity.
He emphasised that he would continue to speak out strongly against war and violence, urging leaders around the world to embrace peaceful solutions.
Despite the criticisms directed at him, Pope Leo XIV insisted that he remains committed to his calling as a peacemaker.
He reiterated that his voice is guided by faith and the responsibility of the Church, not by political pressure or influence from any government.
The comments come amid heightened tensions following Trump’s earlier statement expressing dissatisfaction with the Pope’s position on international conflicts.
However, the Pontiff maintained that his message is directed broadly at global leaders, encouraging them to prioritise peace over division.
As part of his ongoing African visit, the Pope is expected to engage with political and religious leaders while promoting interfaith dialogue and cooperation.
The tour includes stops in several countries, where he will address issues relating to unity, peacebuilding, and humanitarian concerns.
