National News – The caucus of the African Democratic Congress in Nigeria’s House of Representatives has urged President Bola Tinubu to remove and prosecute the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, over alleged partisanship ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The demand was made on Monday in Abuja by caucus leader Afam Ogene, who claimed that recent actions and statements linked to the INEC boss have raised serious concerns about his neutrality and ability to conduct credible polls.

According to the lawmakers, Amupitan allegedly made partisan comments on social media in support of the ruling All Progressives Congress and shared controversial posts about religious issues in Nigeria.

Although INEC denied ownership of the account, the caucus cited digital investigations suggesting otherwise, arguing that the situation undermines public trust in the electoral body.

The controversy comes amid a deepening leadership crisis within the ADC.

At the centre of the dispute is INEC’s withdrawal of recognition from former Senate President David Mark as the party’s leader, alongside a rival faction led by Nafiu Bala.

The lawmakers insist that Mark had earlier met all legal requirements and was duly recognised by the commission, supported by official documentation.

They accused INEC of interfering in the party’s internal affairs, worsening divisions and threatening the ADC’s chances of fielding candidates in the 2027 elections.

The caucus also alleged possible collaboration between some judicial officers and electoral officials to influence an ongoing court case regarding the party’s leadership dispute.

In response, the group said it plans to petition the National Judicial Council to investigate judges accused of political bias, warning that such actions could harm Nigeria’s democratic process.

The lawmakers emphasized the need to safeguard electoral integrity and prevent what they described as undemocratic practices.
