National News – Philippine security forces killed 10 suspected Islamist militants early Friday in a violent gunfight in the southern region of the Philippines.

The clash occurred near the town of Marantao, where police and military personnel had moved in before dawn to execute arrest warrants on a notorious armed group.

Authorities confirmed that the operation targeted Amerol Mangoranca, identified as the leader of the Maute-Dawlah Islamiya faction, which has been linked to past insurgent activities.

According to official reports, the suspects resisted arrest, triggering an intense firefight that lasted about an hour.

Among those killed were Mangoranca, his wife, and three other women believed to be part of the militant network.

The military stated that government forces suffered no casualties during the operation and successfully recovered weapons and explosives from the scene.

An infant found unharmed during the raid was also rescued, highlighting the complex nature of the confrontation.

The Philippine Army revealed that the group was suspected of involvement in a January attack that killed four soldiers and injured another.

Security officials also linked the militants to the network responsible for the 2017 Marawi siege, a prolonged conflict that resulted in over 1,000 deaths and widespread destruction.

The siege remains one of the most significant battles against Islamic State-inspired groups in Southeast Asia.

The operation demonstrates the government’s continued efforts to dismantle extremist groups operating in the predominantly Muslim southern Philippines.

Authorities emphasized that intelligence-led missions and coordinated security actions remain key strategies in curbing insurgency and restoring peace in the region.

Experts say the latest crackdown underscores the persistent threat posed by remnants of extremist factions, even years after major military victories.

The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring long-term stability through sustained security operations and community engagement initiatives.
