National News – The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for a series of deadly attacks on Nigerian troops and security forces in neighbouring countries, according to a propaganda video released on Thursday and circulated on social media.
The group alleged that coordinated assaults involving roadside bombs, ambushes, and attacks on checkpoints were carried out in northern Nigeria and parts of the Niger Republic within the past week.
According to the report, ISWAP claimed that one of the attacks occurred during a military patrol in northern Nigeria, where an improvised explosive device detonated, killing seven soldiers, including a Major, and injuring others.
The group further stated that military vehicles were destroyed in the explosion.
It also alleged that another operation targeted an army position near a town’s outskirts, aiming to lure troops into a planned ambush.
The insurgents claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on police personnel and local militias, asserting that dozens of casualties were recorded across different operations.
In the Niger Republic, ISWAP fighters reportedly attacked a checkpoint at the entrance of Rifa city, using machine guns, killing and injuring security personnel while seizing weapons and burning a vehicle before retreating.
In addition, the group accused Nigerian troops of retaliatory actions in Monguno, alleging that civilian homes were burned due to suspected cooperation failures.
However, security analysts have warned that such claims are often exaggerated and designed to spread fear, attract recruits, and project strength.
A security source explained that insurgent groups frequently use propaganda to influence public perception, especially when facing sustained military pressure.
While ISWAP’s claims highlight ongoing security challenges in the region, authorities have urged caution, noting that many of the reports remain unverified and require independent confirmation.
