National News – A legal dispute has erupted between a TikTok content creator and bread manufacturer Bon Bread over a viral video alleging that a loaf of bread remained fresh for two months.
The controversy, which surfaced on April 18, 2026, has sparked widespread debate across Nigeria about food safety, defamation, and social media accountability.
The issue began when a TikToker identified as “Love” posted a video questioning how a loaf she purchased stayed unspoiled after two months.
Although she did not mention any brand name or display a logo, viewers speculated in the comment section, with many linking the claim to Bon Bread.
The video quickly gained traction, prompting reactions from consumers and industry observers.
According to the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Maria Abdulkadir, Bon Bread initiated legal action after efforts to contact the TikToker for clarification failed.
She explained that the company sought to verify the origin of the bread and the conditions under which it was stored but was unable to engage the creator directly.
Abdulkadir added that the viral claims had already caused reputational damage, as online users began associating the brand with the “everlasting bread” narrative.
The TikToker, however, alleged she was served a ₦50 million lawsuit despite intentionally avoiding naming any company.
She maintained that her video was meant to raise general awareness rather than target a specific brand.
Legal experts say the case may hinge on whether the company can prove “identification by implication,” meaning viewers could reasonably link the claim to Bon Bread.
Others argue that without direct mention, proving defamation could be challenging. Public reactions remain divided.
While some Nigerians are calling for stricter food quality regulation, others stress the need for responsible content creation and fact-checking before posting viral claims.
As of now, no regulatory body has issued an official statement, leaving the matter to unfold in court and in the court of public opinion.
