National News – The Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Aniefiok Nkom, has called for unity among stakeholders to preserve the legacy of the council’s founding fathers as it marks its 75th anniversary.
Speaking during a world press conference on Friday in Ikot Ekpene, Nkom outlined plans for the diamond jubilee celebration, emphasizing collaboration as a key driver for sustainable development and future growth.
Nkom explained that the milestone celebration, themed “Celebrating Heritage, Inspiring the Future, Making the First, the Best,” will run from April to December 2026.
He noted that Ikot Ekpene, established in 1951 as Nigeria’s first experimental local government council, holds a historic position in governance and administration in West Africa.
According to him, the anniversary is not just a celebration of the past but a strategic opportunity to reposition the council for economic expansion and cultural revitalisation.
Highlighting the significance of the event, the chairman said the jubilee would feature key activities including the coronation and installation of a Paramount Ruler in August 2026, aimed at restoring traditional authority.
He added that the grand finale in December will include the commissioning of a modern shopping mall to boost commerce, alongside exhibitions showcasing the area’s renowned raffia products and creative industry.
Nkom urged investors, indigenes in the diaspora, traditional rulers, and the media to actively participate in the development of the council.
He stressed that unity, investment, and cultural pride are essential to maintaining Ikot Ekpene’s leadership status and ensuring long-term prosperity.
He concluded that the celebration serves as both a reflection on past achievements and a forward-looking initiative designed to attract investment, strengthen community ties, and position Ikot Ekpene as a hub for economic and cultural excellence in Nigeria.
