National News – Global interest is surging ahead of the 2026 Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, as elite runners from Africa and Europe signal strong participation for the May 23 event in Okpekpe, Edo State, Nigeria.

Organisers confirmed that the 11th edition of the race, recognised by World Athletics as a Gold Label event, is attracting top athletes, particularly from Kenya and Ethiopia, alongside European competitors.

Race director Zack Amodu disclosed that applications have increased significantly, with many athletes completing registrations and persistently seeking confirmation.

However, he explained that strict international regulations prevent direct dealings with unrepresented athletes, as only those with certified agents can be officially processed.

According to Amodu, organisers must prioritise elite runners to maintain Gold Label status, ensuring compliance with global standards.

He added that only top-performing athletes are selected first before considering other qualified entrants, a process designed to preserve the event’s competitive quality.

Since gaining label status in 2015, the Okpekpe race has evolved into one of Africa’s leading road races.

Technical delegate Norrie Williamson praised the race for its unique hilly terrain and high organisational standards, further boosting its global appeal.

The event also carries local significance, with former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole continuing to promote it.

He recently shared his personal fitness preparations, highlighting the demanding 10km course.

To encourage broader participation, organisers have extended registration for Nigerian runners, aiming to increase local involvement and cultural engagement.
