National News – Combined security operatives have successfully rescued the remaining 13 passengers abducted by gunmen in Benue State.

The victims were kidnapped on Wednesday night when armed attackers intercepted a state-owned transport bus belonging to Benue Links along a major route.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, the rescued individuals are expected to arrive in Makurdi for a formal briefing.

The incident occurred as passengers, including young men and women, were travelling to sit for the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in Otukpo.

Security forces had earlier freed five victims on Friday, leaving 13 in captivity until the latest rescue operation.

Authorities confirmed that the operation was part of intensified efforts to combat rising kidnapping incidents in the region.

While the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board had initially denied that its candidates were among those abducted, relatives of the victims strongly disputed the claim.

A family member revealed that many passengers were indeed students heading for their exams, explaining the urgency of their travel that evening.

The police said a press conference would be held upon the victims’ arrival to provide full details of how the rescue was carried out.

Though the exact tactics remain undisclosed, officials hinted at coordinated intelligence and joint security collaboration as key factors in the operation’s success.

This rescue highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of Nigeria, particularly attacks targeting commuters.

However, authorities insist that efforts are being intensified to safeguard citizens and restore confidence in public transportation systems.
