National News – Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has explained the absence of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen from the matchday squad in their 2–1 victory over Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish Süper Lig, stating that the decision was based on fitness concerns rather than tactics.

The match, played on April 19, 2026 at the Eryaman Stadium in Ankara, saw Galatasaray defeat Gençlerbirliği 2–1 to strengthen their title push in the Turkish Süper Lig, with Mauro Icardi scoring in the second minute and Yunus Akgün doubling the lead in the 35th minute.

Osimhen travelled with the squad to Ankara but was ultimately left out after participating only partially in training sessions, with Buruk confirming that the forward experienced fatigue and was not fully ready for competitive action.

He added that the coaching staff made a cautious decision to protect the player, especially with a crucial derby against Fenerbahçe approaching, and emphasized careful management of his recovery timeline.

Galatasaray currently lead the league with 71 points, four points ahead of rivals, and Buruk remains optimistic that Osimhen will return gradually and may feature in upcoming fixtures depending on his fitness level.

The 26-year-old Nigerian international is expected to be monitored closely in training as Galatasaray prepare for one of their most important matches of the season against Fenerbahçe.

The decision highlights Galatasaray’s emphasis on player fitness management during a tight title race, as Osimhen remains a key figure in their attacking setup following his impactful performances since joining the club.

Buruk’s remarks also reassured supporters that the striker’s condition is improving steadily, with medical and technical staff collaborating to ensure he returns at full strength for the decisive stages of the season.

The absence of Osimhen sparked discussion among fans, but Galatasaray secured all three points, maintaining momentum ahead of their upcoming derby clash that could prove decisive in the championship race.

Medical updates will determine his availability for the next fixtures as the club prioritizes long-term performance over short-term risk.
