National News – Ibrahim Kashim, former Secretary to the Bauchi State Government, has officially defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and declared his ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.

The announcement, made in Bauchi on Sunday, April 20, 2026, follows his resignation from the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed in December 2024 and his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July 2025.

Kashim said his decision was driven by concerns over poor development in agriculture, education, and poverty reduction, stating that his experience in public service positions him to deliver governance reforms and improve living standards.

He also emphasized that structured, law-based reforms are needed to strengthen governance and ensure sustainable development in the state.

Kashim told journalists during a media briefing in Bauchi that governance reforms must be guided by law rather than personal discretion, noting that consistent policies are essential to address challenges gradually.

He described the SDP as a historically significant party with strong grassroots structures across wards, local governments, and state levels, despite limited recent electoral victories.

He expressed confidence that Bauchi voters prioritize competence over party affiliation, arguing that electoral choices in the state are driven more by credibility than political dominance.

He further called on members of the PDP and APC to join SDP in building a coalition aimed at repositioning the state for development.

Observers note that the development highlights shifting political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with increasing defections reshaping party structures in Bauchi State.

Kashim’s entry into the race is expected to intensify competition among major political parties as campaigns begin to take shape.

Analysts believe his experience in governance could influence voter perception, especially among youths and rural communities seeking improved economic opportunities and social services.

The Social Democratic Party has continued to position itself as a viable alternative platform, attracting new entrants seeking political reform and expanded grassroots engagement across Nigeria.

Party stakeholders say consultations are ongoing ahead of primaries.
