National News – Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Dr Muttaqha Darma as Nigeria’s new Minister of Housing and Urban Development, marking another shift in his administration’s cabinet structure.
The ceremony took place on April 25, 2026, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, just days after Darma’s confirmation by the Senate.
Darma, who previously served as Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, replaces Ahmed Dangiwa following a minor cabinet reshuffle.
The nomination was submitted by the President and read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, before lawmakers approved it after screening.
During his screening, Darma highlighted Nigeria’s housing crisis, stating that over 100 million citizens face inadequate housing.
He pledged collaboration with the National Assembly to expand affordable housing access and improve institutional efficiency in the sector.
The Presidency, through Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, said the reshuffle is aimed at improving policy coordination and delivering economic benefits under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Across major cities like Lagos and Kano, housing remains a pressing issue, with rising rent costs and urban overcrowding.
Analysts believe Darma’s technical background could bring structure to policy execution, but skeptics argue that previous reforms have struggled due to funding gaps and bureaucratic delays.
Some residents expressed cautious optimism, noting that past promises have rarely translated into affordable homes.
Others say real success will depend on partnerships with private developers and transparent project implementation.
Darma’s appointment signals a renewed focus on housing as a critical economic driver.
If reforms are effectively implemented, it could ease urban pressure, create jobs, and stimulate construction.
However, failure to deliver may deepen public distrust in government housing initiatives.
