INEC Recognition Deepens SDP Leadership Crisis

National News – A fresh leadership crisis has erupted within the Social Democratic Party following the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise Shehu Gabam as the party’s National Chairman.

The decision, published on INEC’s official platform on Sunday, lists Gabam and other National Working Committee members “by court order,” triggering immediate backlash from rival factions.

INEC’s move follows a ruling by the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, which partially nullified earlier decisions affirming another leadership.

The appellate court held that the lower court lacked jurisdiction over internal party matters, thereby reshaping the legal ground on which leadership claims rest.

However, the SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, rejected the recognition, calling it unconstitutional and alleging that no valid court order was served on the party.

He accused INEC of interfering in internal affairs and described the move as a “back-door arrangement.”

This dispute highlights a recurring issue in Nigerian politics—external validation versus internal party sovereignty.

While INEC relies on court pronouncements to maintain electoral order, parties often resist what they see as imposed leadership.

Political observers in Abuja note that the timing is critical, as parties begin early positioning ahead of future elections.

A divided SDP risks weakening its electoral strength and credibility among voters.

Some grassroots members have expressed confusion, with local party structures unsure which leadership to follow.

The broader implication is a potential legal showdown that could further test Nigeria’s electoral framework.

If unresolved, the crisis may affect candidate selection and internal cohesion, ultimately shaping the SDP’s role in upcoming political contests.
