National News – Former John Obi Mikel has dismissed Cesc Fàbregas as a leading contender for the Chelsea FC managerial position, instead endorsing Filipe Luís as the better option.

Mikel made this known via his Obi One Podcast, as Chelsea continue their search for a new manager following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior.

Mikel explained that while Fàbregas has shown promise managing Italian side Como, he believes the Chelsea job is too big and too soon for the Spaniard.

According to him, Fàbregas needs more time to develop his coaching experience before taking on a high-pressure role at Stamford Bridge.

He stressed that Chelsea require a manager with clearer tactical identity and proven readiness for elite competition.

Backing his preferred candidate, Mikel highlighted Filipe Luís’ work with Flamengo, praising his team’s structure, discipline, and attacking philosophy.

He pointed out that Luís has already demonstrated tactical intelligence and a defined playing style, especially during international competitions like the Club World Cup.

These qualities, Mikel said, show potential for success at top European clubs.

Chelsea are currently being managed on an interim basis by Calum McFarlane, while the club’s board evaluates multiple candidates behind the scenes.

Reports indicate that unnamed options are also under consideration as the club looks to make a long-term appointment.

The decision on who becomes the next Chelsea manager is expected to shape the club’s future direction, with fans and stakeholders closely watching developments.

Mikel’s comments add to the growing debate over whether clubs should prioritize experience or emerging managerial talent in high-stakes roles.
