National News – Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, announced compensation of N20 million for each of the families of three soldiers killed in a pre-dawn terrorist attack on a military camp in Kemanji community, Kaiama Local Government Area of the state, while approving N5 million each for six injured personnel receiving treatment in Ilorin.
The attack, which occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Monday, involved explosives and gunfire as armed assailants targeted the camp before being engaged by troops in a prolonged exchange.
Security sources said the attackers attempted to infiltrate the community but were repelled by soldiers and local vigilantes after hours of gunfire.
The troops reportedly prevented kidnappings, though three soldiers were killed in the clash.
Residents said the assailants fled with some military equipment, while several of them were also neutralised, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in rural parts of Kwara State.
During a visit to injured soldiers at the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital in Ilorin, AbdulRazaq described the fallen personnel as heroes and praised their courage in defending the community.
He assured families of continued government support, noting that investments in security and healthcare infrastructure would be strengthened to respond to rising threats in border areas.
Community members in Kaiama expressed mixed reactions, with relief that the attack was repelled but concern over repeated bandit activity in the area.
Security experts say the incident highlights gaps in intelligence and response coordination, warning that attacks on military formations show growing boldness by armed groups across the region.
Authorities have urged calm as security agencies continue investigations into the attackers and the explosives used in the assault.
