National News – In a dramatic rescue operation, youths from the Ohuhu community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State successfully rescued two kidnapped residents after pursuing their abductors into a forest and engaging them in a tense confrontation.
The victims, identified as a commercial tricycle operator and a widow, regained their freedom after the armed kidnappers reportedly abandoned them and fled following sustained pressure from the local search party.
The incident occurred on June 10 when the widow, Mrs. Onyinyechi Jonathan Ekechukwu, was returning from her farm with harvested cassava. She had hired a tricycle rider, Mr. Dennis Okechi, to transport her produce home when armed men emerged from a nearby bush, intercepted them and forced them into the forest.
According to the victims, the six-member gang marched them through dense vegetation for several hours, demanding a ransom of N10 million from their families.
Mrs. Ekechukwu recounted that the kidnappers seized their phones and later instructed them to contact relatives for ransom payments. She alleged that the abductors assaulted her after she spoke in Igbo while communicating with a family member, accusing her of attempting to conceal information.
The widow said the captors moved them through several locations in the forest, crossing a river and threatening them repeatedly. She added that despite the ordeal, she remained hopeful and prayed for rescue.
Their freedom eventually came when youths from Ohuhu community mobilised and launched a search operation in the forest. As the rescue team advanced, firing warning shots and using torchlights to track the kidnappers’ movements, the armed men reportedly became disoriented and fled, leaving the captives behind.
“The moment they sensed they were being surrounded, they abandoned us and escaped. We began shouting for help, and the youths quickly found and rescued us,” Mrs. Ekechukwu said.
She expressed gratitude to the community youths for what she described as their courage and determination, noting that their swift intervention saved their lives.
The widow also raised concerns over recurring security challenges in the area, alleging frequent destruction of farmlands by herders and calling on authorities to strengthen security in rural communities and forested areas.
The rescue has drawn attention for the uncommon role played by local residents in confronting criminal elements, amid growing concerns over kidnapping and insecurity in several parts of the country.
Security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident as of press time.
