National News –  The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a couple in connection with the alleged torture and abuse of a 10-year-old boy in Awada, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, identified as 30-year-old Chisom Chukwukere and her husband, Chukwudi, were apprehended following public outrage over a viral video showing the victim with extensive injuries and severe burns across his body.

Police investigations revealed that the couple allegedly inflicted the injuries on the child, including burns reportedly caused by melted plastic.

In a related development, the Anambra State Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare has taken the couple’s infant child into protective custody. Authorities said the infant has since been placed in the care of a family member pending the outcome of investigations.

During interrogation, Chisom reportedly appealed to police and ministry officials to release the infant to her, claiming the child was ill and required her care. A video circulating on social media showed the suspect making an emotional plea for the return of the baby.

The case has generated widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the alleged abuse and questioning how someone accused of inflicting such injuries on a child could simultaneously seek compassion regarding the welfare of her own infant.

Confirming the arrests, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had intensified investigations and remained committed to ensuring justice for the victim.

Ikenga said the police would continue to enforce laws protecting children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and all forms of violence.

He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, , had reaffirmed the command’s commitment to working with government agencies, child protection organisations and community stakeholders to safeguard the rights, safety and welfare of children across the state.

According to the police spokesman, all individuals found culpable in the case will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The incident has renewed calls for stronger measures to protect vulnerable children and ensure swift justice in cases of abuse and neglect.
