National News – Air travellers across Europe are expected to face higher ticket prices as airlines struggle with rising jet fuel costs linked to the ongoing Iran conflict and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz.
Industry leaders warned that the increase in aviation fuel prices could continue into next year, affecting holiday plans and airline operations.
The warning came from Willie Walsh, who said airlines could not continue absorbing the growing costs of fuel.
According to him, the aviation sector is already under pressure as Europe and the United Kingdom rely heavily on jet fuel imports passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Walsh explained that although some airlines recently reduced fares to encourage more bookings, the discounts would not last.
He said the sharp rise in oil prices means passengers should prepare for more expensive flights in the coming months.
The concern follows disruption caused by the Iran war, which has affected crude oil supplies and damaged refining facilities in the Gulf region.
European countries have since been searching for alternative fuel supplies to avoid shortages during the busy summer travel season.
Officials in the European Union and the UK government said there is currently no major shortage of jet fuel.
However, aviation experts warned that demand usually rises sharply in July and August, increasing pressure on suppliers and airlines.
Travel companies also expressed concern about weaker demand from cautious customers, especially in the UK, where travellers are already dealing with inflation and rising living costs.
Despite this, industry leaders believe widespread flight cancellations can still be avoided if alternative fuel supplies are secured quickly.
Analysts say the crisis highlights how global conflicts can directly affect international travel, fuel prices, and airline ticket costs.
