National News – The All Progressives Congress primary election committee for Zamfara State has pledged to conduct a transparent and fair National Assembly primary election amid growing allegations of bias and compromise.
The chairman of the committee, Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu, made the assurance while addressing journalists in Gusau on Sunday.
He denied claims that some aspirants or political interests had influenced the panel ahead of the crucial APC primaries scheduled for Monday.
Aliyu explained that the committee was sent by the APC national headquarters to supervise the exercise in line with the party’s electoral guidelines.
According to him, the committee’s mission is to ensure equal treatment for all aspirants contesting for various National Assembly tickets in Zamfara State.
He stressed that the panel would remain neutral and would not favour any candidate during the process.
The committee chairman also addressed concerns over the repeated postponement of the APC primaries in Zamfara.
He revealed that the elections were shifted twice to allow more consultations and encourage consensus among contestants.
However, he noted that many aspirants rejected the consensus arrangement, making a direct primary election necessary to avoid political unrest within the party.
Aliyu further dismissed reports of parallel committees allegedly operating in Zamfara to conduct separate APC primary elections.
He described such groups as impostors seeking to create confusion and tension among party members.
He added that the APC national leadership officially recognised only one committee, which had already been introduced to the Zamfara State Government.
The APC panel chairman assured party members and observers that the primary election process would be peaceful, credible and transparent.
He urged aspirants and supporters to cooperate with the committee and avoid actions capable of disrupting the democratic exercise in the state.
