Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has expressed support for a joint presidential ticket between Labour Party’s Peter Obi and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an interview with Symfoni TV, Lawal argued that a combined Obi-Kwankwaso ticket would stand a stronger chance of winning the presidential election than if both politicians contested separately.
According to him, the alliance would significantly improve their electoral prospects, estimating that such a ticket could have about a 70 per cent chance of victory.
Lawal described Obi as a leader who strives to be fair and committed to doing what is right, insisting that teaming up with Kwankwaso would make the partnership more competitive in the 2027 race.
He also assessed the chances of other potential contenders, saying President Bola Tinubu would remain a strong force, while expressing confidence that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would not win the next presidential election if he decides to contest.
Lawal stated that, in his assessment, Atiku’s chances of emerging victorious in 2027 were slim, adding that he believed the former vice president would lose if he entered the race.
His comments come as political realignments and coalition talks continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties exploring possible alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
