National News – Panic has gripped several communities in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State after suspected bandits issued a six-day ultimatum demanding 700 cattle and 1,000 sheep from residents.

The development, which emerged on Thursday, has sparked fear, displacement and uncertainty across affected villages.

According to residents, the demand was conveyed through a written message allegedly delivered to communities including Sukuntuni, Unguwar Tsamiya, Magama, Walawa and Tudun Wulli.

The letter reportedly threatened violent attacks if the demand was not met within the stipulated timeframe.

Many villagers have since fled their homes, fearing imminent attacks by the armed group.

A community source explained that a notorious bandit leader identified as Muhammadu, who recently had a fallout with fellow gang members, moved hundreds of rustled livestock into Rimaye town before issuing the demand described as a “tax.”

He allegedly ordered the affected villages to supply the livestock within six days or face retaliation.

Residents claimed the threat was accompanied by visible movement of armed men on motorcycles in the area, heightening tension.

Fear has intensified due to previous attacks linked to armed groups in the region.

In Sayaya, a past assault resulted in the burning of a hospital, the killing of a police officer and civilians, and the destruction of vehicles.

Many displaced residents have now relocated to nearby towns, including parts of Kano State and Katsina metropolis, leaving several communities deserted.

Civil society stakeholders in the state have expressed concern over the worsening insecurity, blaming what they described as inadequate government intervention.

They also lamented that previous community-led negotiations with armed groups, which once provided temporary relief, have become ineffective.

The state government, however, has urged calm, saying it is investigating the development.

Authorities also warned that the threatening letter could be a ploy to spread fear. Despite official assurances, anxiety remains high among residents who remain unsure about returning home.
