National News – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has confirmed that BON Bread is safe for consumption and free from harmful substances after a scientific investigation into a viral social media claim.
The investigation followed a TikTok video posted on April 13, 2026, by blogger Love Dooshima, who alleged that a loaf of bread stayed fresh for nearly two months without developing mould.
The claim quickly sparked public concern about food safety in Nigeria.
NAFDAC Director-General, Christianah Adeyeye, explained that although the blogger did not mention any bread brand, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited identified the bread as BON Bread and denied the allegations.
In response to the controversy, the company filed a N50m lawsuit against the blogger, while the Nigeria Police later detained her over allegations linked to cyberstalking and misinformation before she was released.
According to NAFDAC, inspectors visited the company’s bakery in Abuja on April 20, 2026, to conduct a detailed investigation.
Bread samples were collected from both the production facility and open markets for laboratory testing.
The agency stated that BON Bread has operated since 2006 and has consistently renewed its product licences without sanctions or recalls.
The laboratory analysis revealed that calcium propionate, an approved preservative used in bread production, was found within internationally accepted safety limits.
NAFDAC also confirmed that the bread samples did not contain bromate, harmful sweeteners, or any objectionable substances that could endanger public health.
Adeyeye added that food manufacturers are permitted to use approved preservation methods to extend shelf life as long as they comply with global food safety standards.
She advised Nigerians to report complaints directly to NAFDAC offices or official channels before taking such issues to social media platforms.
