National News – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially updated its records to declare Morocco as the winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

This decision follows a ruling by CAF’s Appeals Board on March 18, which overturned the January 18 on-field result of the final held in Rabat. Originally, Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in extra time, with Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal.

The West African team’s victory was marred by controversy after Senegal briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco.

CAF’s Appeals Board determined that Senegal’s walk-off constituted a forfeit under Article 84 of the AFCON Regulations.

Consequently, the final has been officially recorded as a 3-0 victory for Morocco, awarding them their second continental title. Senegal is now listed as runners-up, while Nigeria secured third place.

CAF’s media statement emphasized, “The Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match… with the result of the Match being recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football.”

The ruling has sparked debate among football fans and experts, with critics arguing it undermines on-field competition.

Senegal’s Football Federation condemned the decision and confirmed plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), a process that could take up to a year.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe defended the ruling, stating that the organization acted in accordance with regulations and emphasized that no country would be given preferential treatment.

The ruling has attracted global attention, highlighting the importance of governance and fair play in African football.

Morocco’s AFCON 2025 victory marks a historic moment for the host nation, ensuring they take the continental spotlight despite the post-match controversy.

CAF’s decision underscores the significance of adherence to tournament regulations while raising discussions on the spirit of the game.
