National News – A drone and missile attack killed one person and seriously injured four others in southern Russia early Saturday, April 4, 2026, according to regional authorities.
The incident occurred in Taganrog, a port city in Russia’s Rostov region near the Sea of Azov, as the conflict linked to the Russia-Ukraine war continues to escalate.
Officials confirmed that the strikes damaged civilian infrastructure and triggered emergency rescue operations in the area.
Rostov regional governor Yuri Slyusar disclosed the development in a Telegram post, stating that the attack involved drones and missiles that hit the city overnight.
According to him, one person died while four others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Emergency responders were deployed immediately to rescue victims and secure affected areas after the explosions damaged parts of the city.
Authorities further revealed that a missile struck a commercial facility in Taganrog, causing significant structural damage.
In addition, debris from intercepted drones reportedly struck a foreign-flagged cargo ship navigating the Sea of Azov, sparking a fire onboard the vessel.
Rescue teams and maritime emergency services responded to contain the blaze and assess the extent of damage.
Air defence systems in the Rostov region were activated during the attack and successfully intercepted several drones flying over Taganrog Bay and nearby districts, the governor added.
However, falling fragments from destroyed drones still caused damage to surrounding areas, highlighting the risks associated with aerial combat operations.
Although Slyusar did not directly identify the source of the attack, the strike comes amid ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces have previously carried out drone strikes inside Russian territory in response to frequent Russian bombardments of Ukrainian cities since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The latest attack follows another deadly incident just a day earlier when Russian daytime strikes reportedly killed at least 14 people in Ukraine on Friday.
Analysts say the renewed exchange of drone and missile strikes indicates a continuing escalation of cross-border military operations between both countries.
Security agencies in the Rostov region have since intensified surveillance and emergency preparedness efforts to prevent further damage and protect civilians as the conflict continues to affect border regions.
