National News – Five former Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) visited the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday to pledge their support to the current Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
The visit, described as “purposeful” by the Force Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, underscores the importance of institutional backing for effective policing in Nigeria.
The ex-IGPs, including Aliyu Attah, Mike Okiro, Ogbonna Onovo, Suleiman Abba, and Usman Alkali Baba, shared insights from their tenure, highlighting the challenges and responsibilities of leading the nation’s police force.
They emphasized mentorship, practical advice, and the need to sustain reforms, lead with intelligence, and safeguard public trust.
Disu received the delegation with humility, expressing confidence in his role while acknowledging the decades of institutional history he inherits.
According to Giwa, the IGP views his position not as a burden but a privilege, noting that a strong foundation has been laid by predecessors.
President Bola Tinubu officially swore in Disu as the substantive IGP on March 4, 2026, at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, and other top government officials attended the ceremony, following the Nigeria Police Council’s unanimous endorsement of his appointment.
This high-profile visit highlights the critical role of continuity, mentorship, and reform in strengthening Nigeria’s police force and maintaining public confidence in law enforcement leadership.
