National News – The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), led by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, says governors are considering a new national minimum wage of N100,000.

The proposal comes amid rising inflation and growing economic pressure on Nigerian workers.

The NGF chairman made the disclosure on Saturday, May 30, 2026. He said the discussions involve state governors, the Federal Government, and organised labour.

AbdulRazaq said the talks are focused on improving workers’ purchasing power.

He also stressed the need to ensure states can still fund essential services and development projects.

Nigeria’s current minimum wage is N70,000. However, some states like Lagos, Rivers, and Imo already pay above this level to support workers.

The proposed increase has sparked nationwide debate. Workers say their earnings are no longer enough due to high food, transport, and housing costs.

Labour unions continue to demand a living wage that reflects current economic realities.

They argue that wages should guarantee dignity, not just survival.

The NGF insists any new wage must be financially sustainable for all states.

Many states are already facing revenue challenges and rising recurrent spending.

If approved, the new wage could reshape public sector pay and budgeting across Nigeria.

It may also influence inflation trends and household spending patterns.

Analysts say the outcome will depend on negotiations with labour and support from the Federal Government.

Talks are expected to continue as economic pressures persist.
