National News – The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has warned newly promoted senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force against corruption, abuse of office, and indiscipline.

The police chief issued the warning on Monday, March 24, 2026, during a decoration ceremony for officers elevated to the ranks of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.

Disu emphasised that promotion within the force comes with increased responsibility, accountability, and scrutiny.

Speaking at the ceremony, the IGP told the newly promoted officers that their advancement was not merely a reward for past performance but a call to greater duty.

According to him, the officers must demonstrate leadership, integrity, and strict adherence to the rule of law while overseeing their commands.

He stressed that their conduct and decisions must reflect discipline and professionalism expected from strategic leaders within the police hierarchy.

Disu warned that his administration would maintain zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of authority, dereliction of duty, and any form of misconduct.

He said senior officers must take full responsibility for the actions of personnel under their command, noting that weak supervision often encourages misconduct among junior officers.

The police chief also highlighted the importance of firm and consistent supervision across commands.

He explained that senior officers must stay informed about activities within their jurisdictions to ensure discipline and operational effectiveness.

According to him, strong leadership and constant oversight are critical to maintaining standards and ensuring that officers comply with professional guidelines.

In addition, Disu called for people-oriented policing across the country.

He urged the newly promoted officers to uphold professionalism, respect for human rights, and responsiveness to the needs of citizens.

The IGP said the police leadership remains committed to reforms aimed at strengthening operational efficiency, improving accountability, and rebuilding public trust in law enforcement.

As part of the reform initiative, Disu announced that newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General of Police and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police would participate in a strategic leadership retreat beginning March 24, 2026.

The retreat, organised by the Police Reform Secretariat in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, will focus on transformational leadership, professionalism, and modern policing standards.

Earlier this month, several senior officers were promoted to higher ranks to strengthen leadership capacity within the force.
