National News – The Imo State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has launched strict measures to combat quackery and unethical practices in Nigeria’s legal profession.

This move aims to protect clients and uphold professional integrity in legal services across the state.

During a press briefing in Owerri on Thursday, Prof. Nnamdi Obiareri, Chairman of the Lawyers Remuneration (Implementation and Enforcement) Committee, highlighted the importance of regulating lawyers’ fees.

“Under the Legal Practitioners Act, Cap L11 LFN (as amended) 2023, the Legal Practitioners’ Remuneration Order sets clear guidelines for fees on all legal services, ensuring fairness and transparency,” he stated.

The order, effective since May 2023, applies nationwide and covers various services, including drafting title deeds and irrevocable powers of attorney.

The fees are structured as follows: property valued at ₦50 million and below attracts 10%; between ₦50 million and ₦100 million, 10% on the first ₦50 million and 5% on the remaining; above ₦100 million, 7.5% on the first ₦100 million and 3% on additional amounts.

Lawyers must obtain client agreement, ensure fees meet the minimum threshold, and submit signed documents with payment proof to the NBA.

Obiareri warned that failure to comply could lead to suspension, disbarment, or dismissal.

“Clients using unregistered or quack lawyers risk delayed services or unrecognised legal documents,” he added.

NBA Imo Chairman Chris Ihentuge praised the committee for promoting compliance while emphasizing that pro bono services remain unaffected, ensuring access to legal support for vulnerable groups.

“Our goal is to safeguard the profession and prevent illegal practice,” Ihentuge said.

This initiative reinforces Nigeria’s legal system by providing clarity on fees, protecting clients from impostor lawyers, and enhancing accountability in document processing.
