National News – Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has warned the public against a fake Instagram account impersonating him online.
The warning was issued through his media office on Friday after concerns emerged over an account operating under the handle @goodluck_ebelejonathan.
The office stated that Jonathan does not own, manage, or operate any personal Instagram account.
According to Jonathan’s media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, the impersonating account has repeatedly changed its identity and continues to mislead social media users.
He explained that the account sometimes presents itself as a fan page while at other times pretending to be the former president.
The development has raised concerns about misinformation and online identity fraud.
The former president’s office revealed that the username linked to the account has been altered at least 13 times.
Officials believe the frequent changes are part of an effort to avoid detection while maintaining the false impression that the account is officially connected to Jonathan.
Eze urged members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with content from the account.
He stressed that any statements, opinions, endorsements, or messages published through the page should not be attributed to the former president.
The media aide also called on Meta, the parent company of Instagram, to take swift action against the account.
He expressed hope that the platform would address the issue promptly and prevent further attempts to deceive users.
The warning serves as a reminder for Nigerians and social media users worldwide to verify the authenticity of online profiles, especially those claiming to represent public figures.
Cyber impersonation remains a growing challenge, making it important for users to rely on verified sources for information.
