National News – A high-level political reconciliation meeting was held on Tuesday in Kano State involving former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano, Hussaini Mairiga, aimed at resolving an escalating leadership crisis within the party.

The dispute had threatened internal stability, triggered by disagreements over party structure, authority, and post-defection integration arrangements.

The meeting, which took place on May 5, 2026, brought together key stakeholders of the NDC in Kano to address tensions arising from leadership claims and control of party structures following Kwankwaso’s recent political realignment alongside other national figures.

The discussions focused on restoring unity, preventing factional breakdown, and strengthening the party ahead of future elections.

According to Hussaini Mairiga, the engagement produced a consensus that recognized Rabiu Kwankwaso as a key leader in Kano politics under the NDC platform, with all internal disputes declared resolved in the interest of party cohesion.

He emphasized that members agreed to work collectively to reposition the party for electoral competitiveness and grassroots mobilization.

The crisis had earlier intensified after disputes over leadership hierarchy and fears of structural takeover following Kwankwaso’s defection to the NDC, which created parallel camps within the Kano chapter.

However, party executives insist the resolution marks a turning point for unity, urging members to remain calm and focused on rebuilding trust and strengthening internal democracy.

The reconciliation is expected to stabilize the party in Kano State, reduce internal tensions, and reposition it for stronger performance in upcoming political contests.

Analysts say the development may also influence broader coalition dynamics within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, especially as parties prepare for future electoral alignments.

Party supporters in Kano have welcomed the reconciliation, expressing optimism that the resolution of the leadership dispute will reduce defections and enhance grassroots coordination.

Political observers note that sustained unity will be critical for the NDC’s relevance in the state’s competitive political environment, especially amid shifting alliances and growing voter mobilization ahead of the next election cycle.
