National News – The Labour Party has postponed its ward, local government and state congresses as well as its national convention earlier scheduled to begin on March 26, 2026, in Abuja.

Party leaders said the delay will allow broader participation in the ongoing nationwide membership re-registration exercise.

The decision was announced on Wednesday in a statement issued by the Senior Special Adviser to the Interim National Chairman on Media, Ken Eluma Asogwa.

According to the party, the postponement followed consultations during a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee and representatives of labour unions.

Originally, the party had scheduled its ward congresses for March 26, local government congresses for March 28, state congresses for March 31, and the national convention for April 11, 2026.

However, the leadership said the timeline was adjusted to enable more members and prospective supporters to complete their re-registration before internal elections begin.

To coordinate the process, the party inaugurated a 46-member Congress and Convention Committee to supervise the rescheduled activities nationwide.

The committee is chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, who represents Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Other committee members include prominent party figures such as Salisu N. Mohammed, Obinna Aguocha, Amaobi Ogah, Ibe Okwara Osonwa, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Benedict Etanabene, Emmanuel Emeruwa, Lawson Osagie and Imaobong Ufot, among others.

While inaugurating the committee, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, urged members to discharge their responsibilities with diligence, neutrality and commitment.

Usman explained that the postponement would give the committee sufficient time to complete preparations and ensure credible and hitch-free congresses across the country.

She also appealed to party members, supporters and the Independent National Electoral Commission to show understanding as the party finalises arrangements for a new timetable, which will be announced soon.

Party officials noted that the move aims to strengthen internal democracy, expand membership participation and guarantee transparent congresses before the national convention eventually holds.
