National News – Ademola Lookman impressed Atlético Madrid fans and coach Diego Simeone with his growing defensive abilities, despite the team’s 3–2 loss to Real Madrid in the Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday.
The Nigerian forward opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a clever finish following a back-heel assist from Giuliano Simeone, showcasing his offensive threat while contributing to Atlético’s overall gameplay.
Lookman’s performance highlights his evolution on both ends of the pitch. Playing 57 minutes, completing 17 passes with 85% accuracy, he led Atlético’s early attacks, demonstrating maturity in positioning and awareness.
Simeone emphasized Lookman’s defensive improvement, noting the importance of off-the-ball work for the team’s tactical balance.
“We’re also helping him grow defensively so he can contribute that too, which he’s capable of.
He’s a kid with a huge heart and an incredible willingness to learn and improve,” Simeone said during the post-match conference.
Since joining Atlético, the 28-year-old forward has quickly settled in Spain, scoring two goals in seven league games, while adding three goals and four assists across other competitions.
His performances against Real Madrid are particularly notable: after initially showing promise in the 2024 UEFA Super Cup, Lookman scored and earned Man of the Match honors in a Champions League fixture for Atalanta by December 2024.
He now has two goals in three encounters against the Spanish giants, signaling growing influence at critical moments.
Lookman’s blend of offensive creativity and defensive commitment makes him a valuable asset for Atlético Madrid, attracting attention from fans and analysts alike.
His ability to perform consistently under pressure and contribute in multiple phases of play demonstrates not only skill but also tactical intelligence—a quality Simeone continues to nurture.
Atlético supporters can expect the Nigerian international to play a pivotal role in future matches as he continues his journey of growth in Spain’s top-flight football.
