National News – A 27-year-old Nigerian student has been arrested in Umbilo, South Africa, for allegedly possessing high-purity cocaine valued at over R600,000 (approximately N49 million).
Authorities say the suspect, who entered South Africa on a student visa, may have links to a prior drug-related case in 2025.
Police operatives, including the Metro Police Tactical Support Unit and SAPS KwaZulu-Natal Counter Narcotics Unit, apprehended him after finding cocaine concealed in a sock during a search.
Further investigation of his residence uncovered additional narcotics, amplifying the total value.
Officials revealed the arrest is part of a larger probe targeting a suspected Nigerian drug trafficking network.
Several other suspects have been detained, with investigations continuing under the Asset Forfeiture Unit.
Dasen Thathiah, a senior reporter for eNCA, noted that funds continued to flow into the suspect’s account even after his arrest, raising concerns about ongoing illicit activities.
This development coincides with reports of over 100 Nigerians recently arrested in Ghana over alleged fraud and criminal offenses.
Authorities emphasize that the investigation aims to dismantle organized trafficking operations, highlighting the transnational reach of drug-related crimes.
The suspect’s case underscores growing concerns about student visas being exploited for illegal activities abroad.
Law enforcement agencies have assured that continued surveillance and cooperation with international partners remain a top priority.
This arrest adds to a rising trend of Nigerians facing legal scrutiny in neighboring countries, reinforcing the need for vigilance and regulatory oversight.
Experts urge students abroad to adhere strictly to local laws to avoid criminal entanglements.
