National News – The Ogun State Government has assured residents of Ijebu-Ode that all students, teachers and other victims affected by the recent gas leak incident have been treated and discharged from hospital.
The government also announced emergency measures to prevent future occurrences and protect schools across the area.
The Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, disclosed this during a meeting with parents, guardians and residents at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School.
She confirmed that victims admitted at the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, and nearby health facilities had fully recovered after exposure to suspected methane emissions.
According to the commissioner, the incident affected both adults and children, but no severe cases were recorded.
She explained that methane is not toxic but can reduce oxygen levels in the body, leading to breathing difficulties, fatigue, rapid heartbeat and, in severe situations, unconsciousness.
To improve safety, the state government said ambulance crews equipped with oxygen supplies and paramedics would be stationed across Ijebu-Ode for rapid emergency response.
Health officials, surveillance nurses and rapid response teams have also been deployed to monitor affected communities and schools.
The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, revealed that gas analysers had already been installed around schools to monitor air quality.
Experts from Olabisi Onabanjo University are also assisting the government in analysing environmental data collected from the area.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Education, Abayomi Arigbabu, urged parents and residents to remain calm and avoid spreading false information capable of causing panic.
Police authorities confirmed that security personnel, including specialised units and drone surveillance teams, had been deployed around schools and surrounding communities to guarantee the safety of students and residents after the second gas leak incident reported within two months.
