National News – Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has made a remarkable comeback after serving a two-month betting-related suspension, reclaiming his place as a first-choice goalkeeper for both the Italian club and the Nigerian national team.
The 26-year-old’s journey from sidelined player to key starter highlights the club’s focused approach to rehabilitation and performance enhancement.
Udinese technical director Gokhan Inler revealed that a personalized programme combining psychological support, technical drills, and leadership training was central to Okoye’s revival.
Okoye’s suspension initially cast doubts over his future at Udinese and his standing with the Super Eagles.
However, the club invested in one-on-one coaching, emphasizing communication skills and defensive leadership alongside shot-stopping.
Inler stated, “Every week, alongside the goalkeeping coach and head coach, we put in considerable effort.
Maduka must show his worth consistently on and off the pitch.”
Since his return, Okoye has started all Serie A matches and played the full 90 minutes in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Iran, underscoring his regained confidence and form.
Okoye missed Nigeria’s friendly against Jordan due to a minor thigh strain, but with Stanley Nwabali currently unattached to any club, the Udinese goalkeeper appears poised to retain the number one jersey under coach Eric Chelle.
Inler emphasized that belief in the player was crucial, adding that the individualized approach allowed Okoye to develop his technical and mental abilities effectively.
