National News – Senator Sandy Onor has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2027 general election after securing the party’s ticket through a consensus voice vote by delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The exercise, recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, received backing from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking after his emergence on Tuesday, Onor said his campaign would focus on tackling rural poverty, insecurity and economic hardship affecting millions of Nigerians.
He stressed that many rural communities had suffered years of neglect despite being home to the majority of the population.
The former senator promised to improve living conditions by creating jobs, reviving local economies and supporting vulnerable groups, including teachers, transport workers and unemployed youths.
According to him, addressing poverty in rural communities would significantly reduce insecurity, banditry and terrorism across the country.
Onor also pledged to strengthen local government autonomy if elected president in 2027.
He stated that properly funded councils would help create employment opportunities, support traditional institutions and improve grassroots security through local vigilante structures.
The PDP presidential candidate highlighted his years of experience in public service, noting that he had served as a local government chairman, commissioner and senator.
He said his background in both executive and legislative roles had prepared him to govern effectively and deliver meaningful reforms.
Chairman of the PDP Primary Election Committee, Samuel Ortom, commended party members for conducting a peaceful and orderly primary election.
Party chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman also described the successful exercise as proof that the PDP was ready for the 2027 presidential race.
Onor expressed confidence in his readiness for the election, insisting that he possesses the experience, leadership capacity and vision needed to move Nigeria forward and address the nation’s pressing economic and security challenges.
