National News – Frank Onyeka ended a two-year club goal drought on Friday night, scoring for Coventry City in a thrilling 3–2 victory over Derby County in the EFL Championship.

The match took place at the CBS Arena, where the Nigerian international opened the scoring in the 12th minute, helping Coventry strengthen their lead at the top of the Championship table.

Onyeka’s early goal sparked celebrations among Coventry supporters and gave the hosts an advantage before Derby County responded before halftime.

Derby striker Ben Brereton Diaz scored twice to briefly turn the match around, placing the visitors ahead.

However, Coventry produced a determined second-half comeback to secure a dramatic 3–2 victory.

The goal was Onyeka’s first at club level since March 13, 2024, when he scored for Brentford in a Premier League clash against Sheffield United.

Since then, the defensive midfielder had endured a 55-match scoring drought across competitions, including appearances in the Premier League, Bundesliga, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and the Championship during spells with Brentford, Augsburg and Coventry.

Despite the dry spell in front of goal, Onyeka remained influential with defensive performances and midfield stability.

Under manager Frank Lampard, his primary responsibilities have focused on breaking up opposition attacks, shielding the defence and winning back possession rather than contributing goals.

Since arriving on loan from Brentford, Onyeka has made nine Championship appearances for Coventry, starting eight matches and averaging over 70 minutes per game.

His statistics include solid defensive numbers such as tackles, interceptions and ball recoveries, which have helped Coventry maintain their impressive form this season.

With the win, Coventry moved to 83 points after 40 matches, opening a nine-point gap over second-placed Millwall with six games left in the campaign.

The club could secure promotion to the Premier League when they host Sheffield Wednesday on April 11, a result that could also trigger Onyeka’s permanent transfer clause.
