National News – A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki has declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election during a special national convention held in Abuja.
It was held on May 30, 2026, at the factional national secretariat in Area 10, Garki, Abuja, where delegates ratified his nomination in absentia.
Although the politician Goodluck Jonathan was absent, his Certificate of Return was received on his behalf by Bayelsa lawmaker Fred Agbedi.
The decision was taken during a gathering of delegates and stakeholders aligned with the factional leadership, marking a significant step in the group’s political strategy for the next general election.
The announcement has intensified political discussions within Nigeria’s opposition landscape as parties prepare for the 2027 polls.
This move is expected to generate further reactions from party loyalists and political observers, especially concerning legitimacy, party unity, and the broader implications for opposition politics in Nigeria as the 2027 general election approaches.
It also underscores the continuing influence of prominent political figures such as Goodluck Jonathan within Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape, as factions reposition themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Key details of the announcement show a strategic attempt by the faction to project unity and attract national attention ahead of 2027.
The event in Abuja brought together delegates who endorsed the decision despite internal party divisions, reinforcing the role of factional conventions in shaping Nigeria’s political direction.
Observers note that the absence of Goodluck Jonathan did not prevent his nomination, as procedural ratification was completed and formally acknowledged through the issuance of his Certificate of Return delivered to representative Fred Agbedi.
