National News – Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested a 60-year-old suspected gunrunner, Okon William, in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The arrest was carried out on April 19, 2026, following credible intelligence reports about illegal arms trafficking activities within the Ubanbat community.
Authorities disclosed that the suspect was apprehended during a targeted operation by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, aimed at curbing the spread of illicit firearms and violent crime in the region.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the operation led to the recovery of two locally fabricated long guns concealed in the suspect’s possession.
The police explained that the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal arms networks and enhance public safety.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly engaged in covert methods to evade detection while distributing weapons.
Officials further stated that the suspect has provided useful intelligence that is aiding investigations into a broader arms trafficking and fabrication network operating within the state and possibly beyond.
The police added that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate, as well as recover more illegal weapons linked to the operation.
The Commissioner of Police, Rashid Afegbua, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling criminal activities, particularly the proliferation of illegal arms.
He urged residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information, emphasizing that community cooperation remains vital in preventing crime and maintaining peace.
The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations.
