The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged mob killing of a 21-year-old man, Emmanuel Effiong, in Uyo.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, revealing that the suspects allegedly killed the victim before secretly burying his body in a shallow grave.
According to the police, preliminary investigations showed that Effiong was accused of stealing chickens and eggs from a poultry farm located along Mbak 4 Community in Uyo Local Government Area on April 19.
John said the victim was reportedly beaten with sticks and machetes by a group of individuals until he died.
She explained that the investigation began after the command received credible intelligence alongside a viral video showing the victim being brutally assaulted.
“In the disturbing footage, the victim was seen lying helpless in a pool of blood with his hands and legs tied before being dragged on the ground beside a white Mitsubishi pick-up van,” she said.
The police spokesperson added that operatives launched an intensive investigation, which led to the arrest of four principal suspects.
She also disclosed that officers recovered key exhibits linked to the incident, including the white Mitsubishi pick-up van allegedly used during the crime.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Azare, condemned the act of jungle justice, stressing that anyone suspected of committing an offence should be handed over to the police or other lawful authorities for proper investigation and prosecution.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives, ensuring justice, and upholding the rule of law.
