Colombian music star Shakira has disclosed that Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy was her first choice to feature on the official 2026 FIFA World Cup anthem, Dai Dai.
Speaking about the collaboration, Shakira said she knew the song needed a powerful male voice to complement its energy after completing the track.
“The World Cup carries a big male energy, so I was like, who can give me that very masculine voice in Afrobeats?” she said.
Shakira explained that she has admired Burna Boy’s music for a long time and personally reached out to him for the collaboration. She added that she waited for about 20 days before the Nigerian singer eventually sent in his verse.
The collaboration has generated excitement among football and music fans ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Burna Boy’s contribution expected to bring an Afrobeats flavour to the tournament’s official soundtrack.
