National News – Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Lagos to brief President Bola Tinubu on the security situation in Maiduguri, Borno State, following his recent on-the-spot assessment after deadly suicide bombings in the city.
Shettima’s visit to Lagos comes days after coordinated explosions rocked parts of Maiduguri, leaving at least 23 people dead and more than 100 others injured.
The attacks occurred on Monday evening and targeted crowded locations, including the popular Monday Market, the Post Office Flyover, and a security checkpoint near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
According to official reports, the explosions happened almost simultaneously at about 7:02 p.m., causing panic and significant casualties.
Emergency responders quickly rushed victims to nearby hospitals, with many of the injured receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Following the attacks, the Vice President travelled to Maiduguri to assess the situation firsthand and meet with families affected by the tragedy.
During the visit, he interacted with victims, community leaders, and security officials while evaluating the extent of the damage caused by the bombings.
Shettima explained that the trip was undertaken at the directive of President Tinubu, who ordered an immediate review of the security situation in the state.
The Vice President noted that his findings and recommendations would be presented directly to the President during the briefing in Lagos.
While visiting injured victims at the teaching hospital, Shettima condemned the attacks, describing them as barbaric acts that target innocent civilians.
He stressed that no ideology, religion, or grievance could justify violence against ordinary citizens.
He also assured residents that the Federal Government would support victims and affected communities through emergency response and recovery initiatives.
Agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency, the North East Development Commission, and the Borno State Government have been mobilised to provide assistance.
Shettima reiterated the government’s determination to restore lasting peace and stability across Borno State and the wider North-East region, promising that those responsible for the attacks would be tracked and brought to justice.
