National News – The Sultanate Council in Sokoto has officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal 1447AH, marking the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr across Nigeria.
The announcement followed the non-sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon on Wednesday, the 29th day of Ramadan, prompting the completion of the fasting month to 30 days.
The declaration was conveyed in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the statement, reports from moon-sighting committees across Nigeria confirmed that the crescent was not observed on Wednesday, meaning Thursday, March 19, 2026, completes the 30th day of Ramadan.
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, subsequently approved the report and announced Friday as Eid-el-Fitr day for Muslims nationwide.
The revered Islamic leader congratulated the Muslim Ummah and urged Nigerians to continue praying for peace, unity and national development.
Eid-el-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period during which Muslims observe fasting, increased prayers and acts of charity.
The Islamic calendar relies on the sighting of the crescent moon to determine the beginning and end of months, a tradition rooted in the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
Ahead of the Sallah celebrations, security agencies across Nigeria have rolled out extensive security operations to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free festival.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps announced the deployment of over 53,500 personnel across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Similarly, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that officers and tactical units have been stationed at Eid prayer grounds, shopping malls, markets, motor parks and recreation centres to prevent crime and maintain public safety.
Authorities also warned against unlawful activities, including the use of fireworks, reckless driving and disturbances during the festivities.
Security commanders in several states have intensified patrols, surveillance operations and intelligence-led policing to safeguard lives and property.
Residents were advised to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies during the celebration period.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government earlier declared Thursday and Friday as public holidays to allow Muslims across the country celebrate Eid-el-Fitr with family and loved ones.
