National News – Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has called for fair treatment and protection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is reportedly in detention, while also urging the release of businessman Tunde Ayeni.

The statement, issued on Sunday, May 17, 2026, via Frank’s Facebook page, raised concerns over human rights, due process, and alleged political persecution.

According to Frank, security agencies and judicial authorities in Nigeria must ensure that El-Rufai’s safety, dignity, and legal rights are fully protected while investigations continue.

He also insisted that Ayeni’s case should be handled transparently, fairly, and in line with the rule of law.

Frank questioned the consistency of anti-corruption enforcement by agencies such as the ICPC and EFCC, asking whether selective justice is being applied to politically exposed persons.

He further warned that unequal treatment of suspects could undermine public trust in democratic institutions and heighten political tension ahead of future elections.

The call, which centers on fairness, accountability, and national stability, also urged international human rights organisations to monitor developments closely in Nigeria.

Frank emphasized that while anti-corruption efforts are necessary, they must not be used as tools for intimidation or suppression of dissenting voices.

He urged authorities to act responsibly to prevent escalation and protect Nigeria’s democratic image globally.

He noted that ensuring justice in El-Rufai’s detention and Ayeni’s investigation reflects on Nigeria’s commitment to rule of law and good governance.

Frank, a known political activist and critic of successive administrations, reiterated that his intervention was aimed at strengthening democratic accountability and not shielding any individual from lawful prosecution.

He stressed that the situation highlights ongoing debates in Nigeria about balancing anti-corruption enforcement with civil liberties and due process guarantees under the Constitution.

The former APC spokesman also appealed for calm among supporters and urged institutions to avoid actions that could escalate political divisions across the country.

Observers say the case could shape public perception of fairness in Nigeria’s justice and political systems.
