National News – President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sympathy to former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, over the death of his wife, Hajiya Hadiza Jega, who passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2026.
The condolence message was delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented the President at the Janazah prayer held at the National Mosque in Abuja.
The funeral prayer was attended by family members, associates, and sympathisers who gathered to honour the late Hadiza Jega and support the former electoral chief during the difficult moment.
The ceremony followed Islamic burial rites shortly after the Zuhr prayer.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the late Hadiza as a woman known for her grace, strong character, and unwavering support for her husband throughout his years of public service.
The President noted that Hadiza played an important role in education and community development, highlighting the positive influence she had within her immediate environment and beyond.
In his condolence message to Professor Jega, Tinubu said he received the news of her passing with deep sadness, acknowledging the pain of losing a spouse after decades of marriage.
“Dear Professor Jega, it is with a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of your beloved wife of over 40 years.
Hajiya Hadiza was an exceptional woman whose strength and devotion touched many lives,” the President said.
He further prayed for comfort and strength for the bereaved family during the period of mourning, asking God to grant the late Hadiza eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
Earlier reports indicated that Bayero University, Kano, where Professor Jega previously served as Vice-Chancellor, announced the death of Hadiza Jega.
The university confirmed that the Janazah prayer would take place at the National Mosque, Abuja, on Sunday.
The passing of Hadiza Jega has drawn condolences from public officials, academics, and community leaders who recognised her quiet but meaningful contributions to family, education, and community life.
